{"id":261,"date":"2010-09-08T16:18:37","date_gmt":"2010-09-08T23:18:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.mediafire.com\/?p=261"},"modified":"2016-02-15T11:58:16","modified_gmt":"2016-02-15T17:58:16","slug":"partial-outage-yesterday-due-to-ddos-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blog.mediafire.com\/2010\/09\/partial-outage-yesterday-due-to-ddos-attack\/","title":{"rendered":"Partial outage yesterday due to DDoS attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"China\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mediafire.com\/imgbnc.php\/2ccecbabea0ac2ef678a0c3ec2f5f63c6g.jpg\" alt=\"China\" width=\"240\" height=\"192\" \/>We had sporadic website outages throughout yesterday due to a large and extremely distributed <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Denial-of-service_attack\">denial of service attack<\/a> largely originating from China Telecom.<\/p>\n<p>Starting at 9:51 AM CT we started\u00a0receiving spoofed TCP connection requests. \u00a0During the attack we were receiving 99.87% invalid connections requests. \u00a0The attack was aimed at our web server firewall and load balancer chains. \u00a0The \u00a0high volume of invalid connections prevented services from responding to many valid requests. \u00a0While we have equipment to mitigate these types of attacks the sheer volume of connections being established overwhelmed the hardware designed to prevent this type of attack and which are critical in providing web services. \u00a0We eventually mitigated this attack and greatly increased our capacity for this path through our network. \u00a0We are working with our vendors further increase our capacity for this type of attack.<\/p>\n<p>We apologize for any\u00a0inconvenience\u00a0this may have caused our users.<\/p>\n<p>Derek<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We had sporadic website outages throughout yesterday due to a large and extremely distributed denial of service attack largely originating from China Telecom.
