Upgrades and Growing Pains
As I briefly mentioned in the last post, we’re doing a series of upgrades to MediaFire’s infrastructure this week as well as some additional minor upgrades next week. Yesterday’s maintenance marked the first in this series as we took MediaFire offline to install some new high-end networking hardware and upgrade our database servers.
Unfortunately, this upgrade took much longer than we anticipated due to a faulty piece of said high-end networking hardware failing shortly after installation. Everything is up and running again however we will need to take the site down for a little while today to finalize the installation. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience the prolonged outage may have caused you. We’re working around the clock to ensure that this does not happen again and future maintenance is performed with the absolute minimum possible impact to the site’s functionality.
Although we still have a few other scheduled upgrades (which may include some brief downtime) to perform over the next few days, most should be fairly transparent to the user experience and should not interrupt the service for any prolonged periods of time.
So what do all these upgrades mean for MediaFire? Essentially it means we’re in the process of gearing up to launch some of your most frequently requested new features, so check back here within the next couple weeks for a more exciting update.
In the meantime, I’ll keep you all informed about how things are going with the upgrade as it continues. And as always, if you happen to find any new bugs you want us to squash, or if you have any last minute comments or suggestions for the next feature roll-out, drop us a message over on the contact page.
Tom

Any chance for FTP support? I’d love to use my FTP client w/ MediaFire.com.
Thanks.

I’ve come to depend on MediaFire to upload my audio files for Librivox.org (the audio version of Project Guttenberg).
Now that it’s down for only a few hours (I hope!) I feel like I’m going through withdrawal!!
Come back soon, MediaFire!! You’re missed!!
March 23rd, 2007 at 5:55 pm
So what are said features?
March 24th, 2007 at 5:25 am
Hi Shawn,
I don’t want to give out too many details (since they’re always subject to change up until they launch) but it involves a reworking of the My Files page and a few other minor changes and additions. The final touches are just being put on during this hardware upgrade and I’m pretty confident that you’ll find it to be a nice improvement to the functionality of the page.

Frankly, I think your service is perfect as it is. I can’t imagine you could possibly do much else to improve it. I have been telling everyone about it– thank you VERY much!
March 26th, 2007 at 9:14 pm

March 28th, 2007 at 4:16 pm
thank you
March 28th, 2007 at 6:19 pm
I would, i mean this services any host has them but the difference here is that its free, thtas what kills the competition, the fact that this premiuim advantages that youd have to pay for in any other place are free here, well also what makes it great is the fact that it checks for virus before you download and the fact that they have two servers just in case. =), keep up the good work and keep it free!!! =)

This site must be one hell of an investment, how do you ever expect the site to be financially viable without plastering it advertisements or an upgrade feature? Unless it’s just a very expensive hobby.
March 29th, 2007 at 12:18 pm
I wanted to thank you for all the work you do on this site and for replying so quickly when I asked for help! I’ve been very happy with the service since I began using it as one of the two alternatives for housing my downloads.

Lovin’ MediaFire but I sure miss the unlimited file sizes. Any chance we’ll see file sizes beyond 100MB in the future? Kinda crimps using MediaFire as a mirror for website downloads.
April 4th, 2007 at 10:14 pm
Nice to see the site coming along smoothly. Hope to see more features and such from mediafire in the future.
April 5th, 2007 at 10:56 am
Sir,
It’s great to see that at last we have a file uploading and sharing site with unlimited space. Thank you very much for that.
It would be great if there is the option of creating folders to keep related files in them.
Something in the lines of www.4shared.com. Am not comparing, but this site is a nice one. We can always learn from others.
Thanks a lot.
April 6th, 2007 at 12:12 pm
Is there a possibility (in the future, of course) for a feature allowing users to email files to/from our account?
April 6th, 2007 at 5:24 pm
Your site is so cool. I like it so much.
April 7th, 2007 at 2:30 am
Hey, tom. This is the first time leave some words on the MF blog. I found this site almost at last month, and love it soon. Cuz it’s very convenient. I think mediafire is one of the best free space site. very appreciate ur effort, keep it up man.
Hope mediafire becomes better after it upgraded.

This is no doubt the best file hoster. not only it’s free, the service is damm good to! I luv it more than sendspace, mu, rapidshare & etc.
April 8th, 2007 at 6:34 am

April 8th, 2007 at 6:58 pm
Hi I’d like to say that you’re doing a great job! I’m anxious to see what you gonna do to My Files page ^_^! And (just as someone already said here) thanx 4 answering so fast when I ask 4 help by e-mail.
You guys rock!
April 9th, 2007 at 2:03 pm
I love the site as it is, but increasing the file size for uploading to around 200M or 300M would be nice.
April 9th, 2007 at 6:31 pm
If only this was unlimited space, free, and faster uploading speeds, this would be #1. better than useless rapidshare.
April 11th, 2007 at 3:09 am
I’d love this place, if only there was remote uploads. But, you guys still rock!
April 12th, 2007 at 8:10 am
OS, Antivirus, Image Editor, Vector Application…and Mediafire!!!
Thats all I need
April 12th, 2007 at 11:18 am
i’d like to give a suggestion..please add tagging/label feature..just like in gmail..
April 13th, 2007 at 11:03 am
Hello! Love the service–very convenient and it just works. Problem is, I can never remember your name! All the file sharing sites all basically have the same name drawing from the same pool of words, and every time I use your service (3 or so times a quarter) I have to frantically spend 20 minutes finding out what the heck that great service I used is called. Need a newsletter to jog my memory!
April 20th, 2007 at 10:39 am
You have provided me with such a good service..I will strongly recommend to my friends…Keep up the good work..love this place very much
April 21st, 2007 at 12:05 am
Will there ever be a upload from URL feature?!
April 23rd, 2007 at 4:33 am
I really would like to see virtual folders within the ‘My Files’ area of the website.
This would be great for organising files.
April 24th, 2007 at 7:57 am
tag/label all files uploaded?
ftp support?
folder or some organizing (possibly search) support for all files uploaded?
couldn’t find delete
so auto backup tool with version support? etc etc (possibility is endless, got so many ideas i just can’t write it)
beyond that it perfect !!
April 25th, 2007 at 2:49 pm
Perhaps you guys could install a system where the base amount of 100MB is still free, but then a scaling system of larger downloads and uploads are available for people who pay a fee?
So someone could upload and download 10 gig files, but would then have to pay a subscription service or something…
It would be *very* useful for some as long as the fee wasn’t ridiculous…
April 27th, 2007 at 7:51 am
This site is fantastic, it beats the others without a shadow of a doubt. I too would like to see folders to organise uploads if that was at all possible.
April 28th, 2007 at 7:15 am
thank you very much
May 8th, 2007 at 10:23 pm
I agree about the ftp idea, and also if you could let us upload more then 10 files at a time so that I can let my computer upload all through the night instead of letting it finish and do nothing until the morning. That would be great. Thanx.
May 27th, 2007 at 9:55 pm
wow i’m so lucky…
hehehehe
May 28th, 2007 at 2:36 am
All i can say is mediafire is the best! free hosting and the upload/download speed just great!
Mediafire rocks!!!
May 28th, 2007 at 3:55 am
Like everyone else, I’m surprised & loved to see the new interface, great new features like introducing folder, images, and much more… Thank You mediafire team for offering such a great service to us.
June 2nd, 2007 at 12:29 pm
Hey … wonderful site
With the impending improvements will you consider ….
in addition to the option to download… those video files uploaded be allowed to played online in webplayers.
This will be great if our uploaded files can automatically play in the embedded webplayers on our own forums/blogs.
I may be missing something … does this service already available and/or are there plans to include this service. looking forward to it.
Thanks

I don’t know which word I can use to describe how perfect this free file hosting service bring to us! Maybe SO WONDERFUL!!!
I used to use a lot of free file hosting service but this could be the best of all!
Simple and nice interface, no time limit on the storage of uploaded files, upload and download speed quite fast, support for Unicode file name.
I hope that in the future if the owner of this site removes “no time limit on the storage” feature, he can add another feature such as a count-down clock next to each file to let us know when that file is deleted.
Thank you the team! You all are so great!
July 6th, 2007 at 1:45 pm
Yes, this site rocks! I have tried a bunch, they
all start out great and then crater.
I would love to see a PRO service.
I need to send HD files to clients
and now I have to zip and upload to my own ftp
I am constantly jugging space.
I would love to have some kind of
a dedicated drive (s) that I could purchase?
I would pay hundreds per month for
a service like that!!!

its really good sharing point at this modern time
